Key Responsibilities
As a Principal Ecologist, you will be responsible for:
- Leading the ecological component of large-scale, complex projects across Ireland, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Appropriate Assessments (AA), and Habitats Directive Assessments (HDA).
- Managing and mentoring a team of ecologists, ensuring high standards of work quality, project delivery, and professional development.
- Providing strategic ecological advice to clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Overseeing ecological surveys, data analysis, and reporting in compliance with relevant environmental legislation and guidelines.
- Leading the development of innovative ecological solutions for clients, balancing environmental protection with project objectives.
- Managing client relationships, including preparing proposals, tenders, and project briefs, as well as ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Staying up to date with ecological best practices, legislation, and policy, ensuring that Scott Cawley remains at the forefront of ecological consultancy in Ireland.
Requirements
- A degree (preferably a postgraduate qualification) in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 8 years’ experience in ecological consultancy, with a proven track record of leading complex ecological projects.
- In-depth knowledge of Irish and EU biodiversity legislation, including the Habitats and Birds Directives, and planning laws.
- Strong leadership, team management, and mentoring skills.
- Experience in conducting and managing habitat and species surveys.
- Proven expertise in EcIA, AA, HDA, and other ecological assessments.
- Excellent report-writing, communication, and client management skills.
- Full membership or eligibility for membership with CIEEM or a similar professional body.
- A full, clean driving licence is essential.
Desirable Skills
- Strong business development and project management capabilities.
- Expert witness experience desirable not a must
